When it comes to healthy eating, why do so many people view it as boring or dull? It can be a common misconception that nutritious food is bland and unappetising (and to many, used to processed foods that are often loaded with flavour enhancers, preservatives and sugar, that may often seem like the case). In reality, there are numerous delicious and satisfying options that are both good for you and enjoyable to eat.
Let's break the stereotype
Contrary to popular belief, healthy eating doesn't have to be monotonous (although try telling that to serious bodybuilders cutting before a contest - that's a whole other ball game). Back with us normal people, take, for example, a homemade pizza loaded with fresh vegetables and lean protein - it doesn't have to be laden with cheese, pepperoni and, god forbid, pineapple. This nutritious twist on a classic favourite is not only flavourful but also packed with essential nutrients too.
Cooking - it's a joy!
Yes, preparing meals from scratch may require a bit more time and effort and fresh meat and veg doesn't have anything like the shelf life of their frozen or processed alternatives, but the rewards are well worth it. Not only is it often tastier, but by cooking at home, you have full control over the ingredients, ensuring that your food is free from harmful additives and preservatives.
And yes, fresh unprocessed foods can often be more expensive too than their processed counterparts, but sensible purchasing and a check of labels can help to mitigate this. Or, do as my friend Val does and freeze anything that doesn't need using straight away. I swear that woman would freeze her husband and defrost when she needs him if she could.
Convenience doesn't have to mean compromise
While convenience foods often get a bad rap for being unhealthy, (and let's face it, there's PLENTY of evidence) there are plenty of quick and easy options that are nutritious as well. Pre-cut fruits and vegetables, pastas, whole grain wraps, and canned beans are just a few examples of convenient foods that can help you eat well without sacrificing taste or quality. Just read the label and look out for healthier options and/or those with less processing and additives; your body will thank you, believe me.
Next time you're tempted to reach for a processed snack or takeout meal, consider the delicious and wholesome alternatives that are available to you. With a little creativity and planning, you can enjoy a diverse and satisfying diet that supports your health and wellbeing - and who can put a price on that?
